With the Indian Premier League (IPL) 2025 entering a crucial phase, the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) has announced significant changes to tackle disruptions caused by rain. After multiple weather-affected matches, including the high-profile clash between Royal Challengers Bengaluru (RCB) and Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR), the board has decided to extend the waiting period before a match is officially called off.

The BCCI has now increased the additional waiting time from 60 minutes to 120 minutes for all remaining league matches, effective from May 20 onwards. Previously, this provision was applicable only to playoff matches. The move comes amid growing concerns over unpredictable weather and its impact on the already tight IPL schedule, where only nine matches are played in the league stage.

In a bid to ensure that matches can go ahead despite rain delays, new cutoff timings have also been introduced. For night matches, the cutoff time has been extended to 11:30 PM, compared to the earlier limit of 10:30 PM. Similarly, for afternoon fixtures, the new cutoff time is now 7:56 PM, up from 6:50 PM.

An official statement from the BCCI read:

“In light of the recent weather disruptions, the board has decided to revise match regulations to allow more time for games to be completed, ensuring a thrilling contest for fans and fair opportunity for teams.”

The decision underscores the heightened importance of each game in the shortened league format. With only a few matches left to decide playoff positions, the BCCI’s revised plan aims to minimize the chances of match cancellations and uphold the competitive spirit of the tournament.
