In a significant move aimed at empowering the farming community, the Union Ministry of Agriculture has announced a new initiative that will provide accurate weather forecasts to farmers across the country — absolutely free of cost.

Under this initiative, farmers who possess a Farmer ID will receive real-time, localized weather updates directly on their mobile phones. The facility aims to help farmers make informed agricultural decisions in response to unpredictable weather patterns that have increasingly impacted crop yields and farming activities in recent years.

With over 6.5 crore Farmer IDs already issued nationwide, the government has access to a wide database containing vital information, including the farmer’s name, land ownership details, crop type, cultivation area, and Aadhaar number. Using this data, the government will send personalized weather forecasts via SMS or through a dedicated mobile application.

Key Features of the Facility:

  • Location-Based Updates: Weather information will be tailored according to the geographic location linked to each Farmer ID.

  • Forecast Details: Farmers will receive advance notifications about rainfall, temperature changes, wind conditions, and humidity levels.

  • Real-Time Alerts: The system will provide timely and accurate updates to help farmers plan their activities.

  • Local Language Support: All communication will be made available in the local language of the farmer for better understanding and usability.

This government facility is expected to help farmers in key decision-making processes such as sowing, irrigation, fertilizer application, spraying, and harvesting. By providing early and reliable weather alerts, the initiative aims to minimize crop losses and boost productivity.

The Union Agriculture Ministry stated that this move is a part of its broader strategy to integrate technology with agriculture and build climate-resilient farming systems.

Conclusion:
With this new facility, farmers will no longer be left guessing about weather changes. Instead, they’ll be equipped with the right information at the right time — helping them protect their crops, save resources, and increase profitability.
