In a significant development in the Vaishnavi Hagavane case, the Home Department has taken strict action against senior prison official Jalindar Supekar, following serious allegations from the victim's family.
Vaishnavi Hagavane, whose death has sparked widespread outrage, was allegedly subjected to sustained domestic abuse. In connection with her death, her husband, in-laws—including her mother-in-law, father-in-law, and two brothers-in-law—have been remanded to 14 days of judicial custody.
The case took a new turn after the Kaspate family, relatives of Vaishnavi, accused Jalindar Supekar—a senior police officer and brother-in-law of Rajendra Hagavane—of aiding the accused. In response to these allegations, the Home Department has acted swiftly.
Jalindar Supekar, who serves as the Inspector General of Yerwada Central Jail in Pune, has now been relieved of his additional responsibilities as Deputy Inspector General (DIG) of Prisons for Sambhaji Nagar, Nashik, and Nagpur. The move is seen as a significant step to ensure an impartial investigation into the case.
In Supekar's absence, the responsibilities for Nagpur have been divided among three officers: Deputy Inspector General Swati Sathe, Superintendent Aruna Mugatrao, and Superintendent Vaibhav Aage.
The government’s prompt action indicates its commitment to transparency and accountability in the case, which continues to draw attention from across the state.
