The decision comes in light of the delay in the release of the updated ITR forms, ongoing system upgrades, and discrepancies in TDS (Tax Deducted at Source) credit information. The CBDT stated that the extension aims to provide sufficient time for taxpayers to file their returns accurately and without hassle.
“With significant changes introduced in the ITR forms this year and enhancements being made to the income tax e-filing portal, additional time was necessary to ensure a smooth and error-free filing process,” the CBDT said in its official release.
This extension is especially beneficial for salaried individuals, freelancers, professionals, small traders, and businesses that are not required to undergo a tax audit. Filing returns by the new deadline of September 15, 2025, will also allow taxpayers to avoid any late filing penalties.
The revised deadline gives taxpayers more flexibility and ensures compliance amidst technical and procedural changes introduced this assessment year.
