In a significant move to combat the growing menace of drug trafficking in Maharashtra, Deputy Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis has announced that strict action will now be taken under the Maharashtra Control of Organised Crime Act (MCOCA) against the smuggling of MD drugs and other narcotics. The announcement was made during the ongoing monsoon session of the Maharashtra Legislative Council.
Speaking on the issue, Fadnavis stated, “A dedicated anti-drug unit is operational in every district of the state, and large-scale operations have already been conducted. We have requested the Central Government to establish fast-track courts for major drug-related crimes. Additionally, a proposal will be introduced in this session to amend the law to allow MCOCA to be applied in such cases.”
The matter was raised by BJP MLA Parinay Phuke, who expressed grave concern over the spread of MD drugs. “The problem is no longer confined to youth; even school children are falling prey to drug addiction. This issue is not limited to urban areas like Mumbai and Pune but is also spreading in rural regions such as Bhandara and Gondia. The accused often get bail within a year and return to crime. Will the government invoke MCOCA against such repeat offenders?” he questioned.
Responding firmly, Fadnavis assured the House, “Serious drug trafficking cases will now be dealt with under MCOCA, and necessary amendments will be made to facilitate this. We are committed to breaking the back of the drug network in the state.” This decision is seen as a major step toward strengthening the state’s anti-narcotics campaign and is expected to significantly deter the activities of the drug mafia in Maharashtra.
