Kerala Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan had requested Prime Minister Narendra Modi to officially change the state's name. On June 25, 2024, this proposal was unanimously approved for the second time in the Kerala Legislative Assembly.

Earlier in 2023, a proposal regarding this was also presented. The pronunciation of the state in Malayalam is always 'Keralam', hence the government believes this change is necessary in official documents, government proceedings, and the schedule of the Constitution.
