Sources close to the project have revealed that the station will serve as a multi-modal transport hub, creating an interchange that connects the east-west and north-south metro lines, and integrates other modes of transport. This move is expected to be a game-changer for the Dharavi redevelopment plan, which places mobility at the core of its design.
“The proposal includes the construction of Dharavi Central Metro Station, which will function as an east-west-north-south connector, becoming a major interchange point for commuters. It is envisioned as a multi-level station,” officials said.
Dharavi’s strategic location already places it at a key transit crossroads. The area is well connected with the Metro Line 3, Western and Central Railways, and is only about three kilometers from the upcoming Mumbai-Ahmedabad high-speed rail terminal. Its connectivity makes it an ideal location for a city-wide transport interchange.
The redevelopment plan emphasizes public transport improvements, particularly given the expected population density after the area’s rejuvenation. The extension of Metro Line 11 through Dharavi will elevate the area’s status to a transport-centric development, making public transportation more accessible than ever before.
Additionally, the project envisions a multi-modal hub at the intersection of Metro Line 11 and major roads in the city. This hub will integrate rail, metro, feeder buses, and non-motorized transport options such as cycling lanes and pedestrian walkways. The introduction of feeder bus routes is expected to ensure seamless connectivity, allowing commuters from local areas to easily access metro and railway stations.
With this ambitious plan, Dharavi is set to become a model of efficient, integrated urban transport, solving long-standing traffic bottlenecks and improving the daily commute for thousands of Mumbai residents.
