Funeral to be held in Varanasi this evening
(Chhannulal Mishra) The senior classical singer and Padma Vibhushan awardee Pandit Chhannulal Mishra has passed away at the age of 91. He took his last breath at 4:15 AM on Thursday in Mirzapur. He had been ill for some time. A few days ago, he was admitted to the ICU of Sir Sunderlal Hospital at Banaras Hindu University (BHU). After showing improvement, he was discharged. However, his health deteriorated again, leading to his demise on Thursday. His daughter Namrata has informed about his passing, and the body is currently in Mirzapur.
The body of Chhannulal Mishra will be brought from Mirzapur to Varanasi by 11 AM. People will be able to pay their last respects throughout the day. The funeral procession will take place in Varanasi at 7 PM. He was admitted to the hospital due to chest pain and a heart attack. The examination revealed a chest infection, hemoglobin deficiency, and skin problems. Despite treatment under the supervision of doctors, his condition did not fully improve.
Pandit Mishra had a special relationship with Prime Minister Narendra Modi. In 2014, when Modi contested the Lok Sabha elections from Varanasi, Chhannulal Mishra was his proposer. For his contributions, he was honored with the Padma Bhushan in 2010 and the Padma Vibhushan in 2017. The Uttar Pradesh government also awarded him the Yash Bharti award. His passing marks the end of a great era in Indian classical music, and there is a wave of mourning among music enthusiasts.
