Typically, Pune records an average of 31.4 mm of rainfall in May. However, due to consistent pre-monsoon showers and heavy downpours earlier this week, that figure has more than tripled this year. On a single day, Shivajinagar recorded 40.5 mm, while Chinchwad received a staggering 101 mm of rainfall overnight. Other areas like Khadakwasla and the NDA region also recorded over 100 mm.
A low-pressure area has developed in the Arabian Sea near the Karnataka coast, leading to a significant increase in atmospheric moisture. This system is currently influencing weather patterns across Madhya Maharashtra, Konkan, and Pune, resulting in widespread rains and thundershowers.
Though the rain subsided by Wednesday afternoon, heavy showers returned later in the evening. Several parts of the city, including Bavdhan, Sinhagad Road, Kothrud, and Katraj, witnessed heavy rainfall accompanied by thunder and lightning, continuing into the night and disrupting traffic on waterlogged roads.
The IMD has forecast heavy rain with thunderstorms across multiple districts, including Pune, Raigad, Ratnagiri, Sindhudurg, Latur, Nanded, Buldhana, and Yavatmal, over the next four days, till May 28.
