According to Central Railway's Public Relations Officer Swapnil Nila, the accident occurred when two local trains brushed against each other while traveling in opposite directions—one heading toward Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj Terminus and the other toward Kasara. The impact caused passengers hanging at the doors and standing on the footboards to collide and fall off the train.
“All the deceased and injured were traveling on the footboard. The collision between passengers hanging from the doors led to this unfortunate incident,” Nila said during a press conference.
The injured have been admitted to Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj Hospital in Kalwa for treatment. Authorities are currently conducting an investigation into the cause of the incident, and railway officials have expressed deep regret over the loss of lives.
This incident once again highlights the issue of overcrowding and the dangers faced by daily commuters on Mumbai’s suburban railway network. Calls for stricter safety measures and better infrastructure have been renewed in the wake of the tragedy.
