Shiv Sena (UBT) MP Sanjay Raut has taken a sharp dig at the Mahayuti government following its decision to cancel two controversial government resolutions (GRs) mandating Hindi language requirements in Maharashtra.
In a statement to the media, Raut remarked sarcastically that it is “surprising that the Thackeray brothers are coming together,” referring to Uddhav Thackeray and Raj Thackeray’s united stand against the imposition of Hindi. He said the government had no choice but to roll back the GRs after facing mounting pressure from political parties and civil society.
“The Fadnavis government has taken a ‘wise’ decision—but only after being shaken by the unity shown by Maharashtra’s leaders,” said Raut. He accused the government of acting out of fear rather than principle, and questioned its commitment to the Marathi language.
Raut further commented that the rare solidarity between Raj and Uddhav Thackeray had clearly unsettled the ruling alliance. “It’s a shock for them to see both Thackerays united. That’s why the government rushed to cancel the GRs,” he said.
Following the cancellation of the GRs, Raut announced that the proposed July 5 march against Hindi imposition has been called off, saying that the objective had been achieved for now.
The controversy over Hindi requirements had sparked a wave of opposition in Maharashtra, with several parties—including Shiv Sena (UBT), MNS, and Prahar Janshakti—joining forces in defense of the Marathi language and regional identity.
