In a major step toward combating climate change, the Maharashtra government is set to enforce the use of energy-efficient cooling systems in all newly constructed buildings. This initiative is part of the state’s broader Cooling Action Plan, aimed at reducing carbon emissions and addressing the rising urban heat crisis.

Dr. Abhijit Ghorpade, Director of the State Climate Action Cell, announced this during the 'Bhavtal Talk' symposium organized jointly by the Bhavtal Foundation and Micro Innotek. The event, focused on “The Challenge of Climate Change,” also featured noted meteorologists Dr. Roxy Matthew Cole and Dr. Vineet Kumar Singh.

“Cities are becoming the epicenters of climate change, and buildings are a major source of carbon emissions,” said Dr. Ghorpade. “To counter this, we are mandating the use of energy-efficient cooling technologies in new constructions. This measure is expected to significantly reduce urban carbon footprints.”

Dr. Ghorpade further explained how climate change is affecting the state, stating, “We are witnessing more frequent and intense events—heatwaves, floods, droughts, and cyclones. Alarmingly, some districts are experiencing both flood and drought crises simultaneously.”

Dr. Roxy Matthew Cole highlighted the broader implications, noting, “Rising carbon emissions are increasing ocean temperatures, leading to shifts in rainfall patterns and severe impacts on agriculture. Sea levels are rising steadily every decade, resulting in coastal erosion and land loss.”

Adding to the concern, Dr. Vineet Kumar Singh addressed the growing threat of cyclones in the Arabian Sea. “The frequency and intensity of storms have increased. We must strengthen systems that deliver timely and accurate forecasts to better prepare communities,” he said.

The event also recognized the efforts of students who won a competition held on the occasion of World Environment Day. They were felicitated for their innovative ideas and contributions toward environmental awareness.

As climate-related risks escalate, this initiative to make cooling solutions more energy-efficient marks a proactive approach by the state government. Experts and stakeholders agree that such systemic interventions are essential to mitigate the adverse effects of climate change and build climate-resilient cities.
