Even as much of the world has moved past the devastating effects of the COVID-19 pandemic, a fresh surge in cases has raised concerns in Maharashtra. According to the state’s Public Health Department, 43 new COVID-19 cases and four related deaths were reported on Sunday, with Mumbai accounting for the majority of the infections. Health authorities have observed a gradual increase in cases, believed to be linked to a new strain of the virus. Since January, the total number of reported COVID-19 patients across the state has reached 300.
Mumbai remains the most affected, with 248 cases confirmed so far. As per official data, a total of 7,389 COVID-19 tests have been conducted since January. There are currently 209 active cases, while 87 patients have recovered. Tragically, four deaths have also been reported. Speaking on the fatalities, a senior health official stated, “All four deceased patients had underlying health conditions. One had nephrotic syndrome accompanied by hypocalcemia attacks, another was a cancer patient. The third had suffered a brain stroke, and the fourth was diagnosed with diabetic ketoacidosis.”
A district-wise breakdown of the latest infections shows the highest number of new cases in Mumbai (35), followed by Pune (4), Kolhapur and Raigad (2 each), and Thane and Latur (1 each). Health officials are urging citizens to remain cautious and adhere to basic preventive measures, especially those with existing health conditions, as the situation continues to develop.
