(Income Tax Return Filing) The final date for filing ITR for the financial year 2024-25 (Assessment Year 2025-26) has been set as 15th September 2025. Those who have not yet filed their return are urged to immediately visit the official portal of the Income Tax Department and complete the process.

This year, due to some changes and technical corrections in the ITR form, taxpayers were given an extension until 15th September instead of 31st July. This period was provided to update the form, reflect TDS credit, and improve the filing system.

If taxpayers do not file the ITR by the given date, they will have to pay a penalty under Section 234F of the Income Tax Act. If the income exceeds 5 lakh rupees, a penalty of up to 5000 rupees will be imposed, while taxpayers with income less than 5 lakh rupees may have to pay a penalty of 1000 rupees.

Those filing returns late may face not only penalties but also other difficulties. There is a provision for imprisonment from three months to two years for deliberate tax evasion. Nevertheless, the final date for filing delayed ITR is set as December 31, 2025. Currently, the Income Tax Department has clarified that more than 6 crore taxpayers have filed their returns.
