After successfully implementing Aadhaar as a digital identity for individuals, the Government of India is now preparing to introduce a similar digital identity system for houses. The upcoming "Digital Address System" is being described as an Aadhaar card for every home, aiming to modernize address management across the country. In an effort to further the nation’s push toward digitalization, the Central Government is planning to implement a Digital Address Scheme, which will assign a unique digital identity to each residential and commercial property in India. The initiative will be spearheaded by the Department of Posts, under the supervision of the Prime Minister’s Office, and is expected to be finalized by the end of this year.

According to sources, the draft of the scheme will be tabled for discussion next week. The objective is to establish address management as a public infrastructure utility, ensuring accurate and efficient delivery of government services and benefits. Under this scheme, each property will be assigned a Universal Digital Index Number (UDIN), similar in concept to Aadhaar. This digital address, or “DIGIPIN”, will include key location details such as street name, house number, and precise geolocation coordinates, making it easier for authorities, service providers, and delivery agencies to reach the right location.

An official involved in the project explained, “With the introduction of DIGIPIN, we aim to simplify address verification and improve the accuracy of service delivery. This will be particularly helpful in streamlining welfare schemes, emergency response, and logistics.”

Additionally, the initiative seeks to curb unauthorized data sharing, especially by companies that store and share citizens’ address details without their consent. New guidelines will be introduced to restrict such practices and ensure citizen privacy and data protection. As India continues its rapid journey toward a digital future, the Digital Address System marks a significant step in enhancing public infrastructure and improving governance through technology.
