WhatsApp to Stop Working on Older iPhones and Android Devices from June 1
If you're still using an older smartphone, it's time to take note. Starting June 1, 2025, WhatsApp will no longer function on select older iPhone and Android devices, as part of Meta’s regular software update policy.
Initially planned for implementation in May, the update was delayed and is now set to roll out from the beginning of June. With this change, WhatsApp is raising its minimum software requirements, citing user security and app performance.
From June 1 onward, WhatsApp will only be supported on iPhones running iOS 15 or later and Android phones running Android 5.1 or later. Devices operating on older versions of these systems will no longer be compatible with the messaging platform.
Meta stated that the primary reason behind this decision is security. Older devices typically stop receiving critical software and security updates, making them more vulnerable to cyberattacks, data breaches, and other security threats.
In recent months, WhatsApp has introduced several advanced features—including chat locks, content copy protection, and enhanced auto-delete settings—which rely on newer operating system capabilities. These features may not work correctly or at all on outdated hardware and software.
Users still relying on older devices are advised to either update their operating system, if possible, or consider upgrading to a newer device to continue using WhatsApp without interruption.
