IPhone Production: Apple phones will now be production in India after tariff war
India is benefiting greatly from the ongoing tariff war between the US and China. Global IT giant Apple has decided to shift the production of all iPhones assembled for the US from China to India. In the next two years, all iPhones sold in the US will be "Made in India". According to US President Donald Trump's new tariff policy, import duties of 26% have been imposed on imports from India, 145% on China, and 46% on Vietnam. This has led to Apple's focus on reducing its manufacturing dependence on China.
Currently, 80% of the iPhones sold worldwide are manufactured in China and only 20% in India. However, the new plan will double the iPhone assembly capacity in India. Foxconn currently manufactures 67% of iPhones in India, while Tata's Pegatron and Tata Electronics handle the rest. The iPhone manufacturing process is very complex, in which more than 1000 spare parts have to be imported from around the world. According to experts, this decision will give a big boost to the electronics manufacturing sector in India.
Not only Apple, but Google's parent company Alphabet Inc. is also preparing to shift the production of its Pixel smartphones to India. Till now, 60% of Pixel phones were made in China, while 30-40% in Vietnam. With the Trump administration imposing a 46% tariff on Vietnam as well, Google has shifted its focus to India. For this, important discussions have recently been held with Dixon Technology and Foxconn. It is reported that 1.12 crore Pixel phones were produced in 2024, and Google intends to increase this production to around 1.5 crore in 2025.
With leading companies like Apple and Google expanding their manufacturing operations in India, the country's manufacturing sector will gain a new foothold on the global stage. The slogan "Made in India" is no longer just a slogan, but has started to become a reality.
