Pune Crime: Mother Kills Twin Sons and Attempts Suicide — Arrested by Loni Kalbhor Police
In a shocking and tragic incident, a mother in Pune drowned her two-month-old twin sons in a water tank before attempting to take her own life. The horrifying act took place in the Theur area along the Pune–Solapur road and has left the local community in disbelief.
The accused, identified as Pratibha Hemantkumar Mohite (35), was arrested late Tuesday night from Mirajwadi by the Loni Kalbhor police. The incident came to light after a resident witnessed the act and immediately raised an alarm. A case has been registered based on a complaint filed by Prahlad Laxman Gond, a resident of the same locality.
Background: A Story of Longing and Tragedy
Pratibha and her husband Hemantkumar were married for over ten years and had been struggling with infertility throughout their marriage. Eventually, the couple opted for artificial insemination, and Pratibha gave birth to twin boys. However, she reportedly grew increasingly distressed as the infants did not seem to be developing normally, even after two months.
According to initial reports, Pratibha was staying with her mother at the time of the incident. Her husband, Hemantkumar, is believed to be employed at a bank in Sangli.
Sequence of the Crime
On the morning of April 8, Pratibha reportedly took her twins to the rooftop of the house. In a shocking act, she drowned both children in a water tank and then attempted to end her own life. A local resident witnessed the incident and immediately informed Prahlad Gonde, who helped raise the alarm. All three were pulled from the tank and rushed to the hospital. Sadly, the twin boys were declared dead on arrival.
"The mother was distressed due to the health condition of her children. We are looking into all aspects, including her mental state, before filing the final report," said a senior investigating officer.
The case has ignited public debate about postpartum mental health, societal pressures on motherhood, and the need for psychological support for parents dealing with high-risk births.
