US President Donald Trump has expressed dissatisfaction over India's oil purchases from Russia and has taken a major step. He has announced a total of 50% import duty on all imports from India. This decision has created tension in India-US trade relations.

Trump announced this through an executive order. He cited national security, foreign policy, and trade laws. According to Trump, India's oil imports from Russia pose a "serious and unusual threat" to the United States. An additional 25 percent tariff has been imposed on the already existing 25 percent tariff, and this new fee will be effective from August 27.

This decision will have a significant impact on Indian exports. Particularly, the auto parts, textiles, electronics, steel, chemical, and pharma sectors are likely to be severely affected. In this context, former trade official Ajay Srivastava reacted by saying that India will now become the country paying the highest tariffs to the USA. This will cause India's exports to the USA to decline by 40-50%. He called Trump's stance "hypocritical."

Reacting to this decision, the Government of India has firmly stated that these charges are “unjust, inappropriate, and unnecessary.” The government has also clarified that all necessary steps will be taken to protect the country's trade interests. This tariff policy of the United States is likely to increase tensions in India-US trade and could also impact the global supply chain.
