Former U.S. President Donald Trump has achieved a significant legislative victory with the passage of his flagship policy proposal, dubbed the "One Big Beautiful Bill," through both chambers of Congress. The legislation, a cornerstone of Trump’s economic agenda, passed the House of Representatives on Thursday with a narrow 218–214 vote, following an equally tight 51–50 vote in the Senate, where Vice President J.D. Vance cast the tie-breaking ballot.

The bill, which has stirred intense debate over the past several days, extends Trump-era tax cuts, introduces new tax breaks, and makes sweeping reductions to certain federal programs. Among its most controversial provisions are significant cuts to Medicaid and an overall reduction in federal tax revenues by an estimated $4.5 trillion over the next two decades.

According to projections by the nonpartisan Congressional Budget Office (CBO), the legislation is expected to slash federal spending by approximately $1.1 trillion, largely through cuts to social safety net programs.

Despite internal concerns about the long-term economic impact, only two Republican lawmakers broke ranks and voted against the bill. The Democratic Party, on the other hand, stood firmly united in opposition. Democratic leaders criticized the legislation for disproportionately benefiting the wealthy and undermining health care access for working-class Americans.

“This bill is a direct attack on everyday Americans who rely on programs like Medicaid,” one Democratic lawmaker stated. “It prioritizes tax breaks for the rich over basic health care needs.”

In contrast, Trump hailed the bill's passage as a fulfillment of his key campaign promises. It marks a strategic political win that could energize his support base and redefine fiscal priorities in Washington.

“This is a big, beautiful day for America,” Trump declared in a statement, referring to the legislation as “transformational” and “a victory for common-sense governance.”
