India Issues Official Statement on Donald Trump’s Tariffs
After U.S. President Donald Trump warned of new import tariffs on India, the Indian government has responded strongly. The Ministry of External Affairs issued an official statement clearly stating that India is being unfairly targeted for purchasing oil from Russia.
Donald Trump announced a 25% import duty on India through his official platform 'Truth Social'. According to him, the taxes imposed by India on American goods are the highest in the world, and he accused India of increasing trade relations with Russia and being active in the BRICS group against American interests.
The Ministry of External Affairs posted on 'X' stating, “After the Ukraine war, instability arose in the global energy market. As Europe diverted its traditional supply from Russia, India began importing oil from Russia for energy security. The United States had greatly encouraged India to make such imports to maintain balance in the global energy market. Therefore, criticizing India now is extremely contradictory.”
The Government of India has firmly responded to the US tariff warning, stating that targeting India over trade with Russia is discriminatory and inappropriate. Decisions made in the context of global energy security are necessary for India's interests, and the statement underscores that the country will protect its economic and strategic autonomy without succumbing to any pressure.
