A significant advancement has been made for India's civil aviation industry. Hindustan Aeronautics Limited (HAL) and Russia's leading aircraft manufacturer United Aircraft Corporation (UAC – Public Joint Stock Company United Aircraft Corporation) have signed a memorandum of understanding to produce the Sukhoi Superjet SJ-100 passenger aircraft in India. This historic agreement was made on Monday in Moscow.

Experts believe that this collaboration will significantly strengthen the Make in India and Atmanirbhar Bharat initiatives. If the production of civil aircraft in India increases, it is expected that the country's aerospace manufacturing sector will gain new recognition on an international level. The Sukhoi Superjet SJ-100 is a modern technology-equipped twin-engine, narrow-body passenger aircraft. With a capacity of about 100 passengers and an approximate range of 3,000 kilometers, this aircraft is considered suitable for short to medium-distance travel. The SJ-100 is successfully flying with many airlines around the world.

This project is also expected to strengthen regional air connectivity in the country. Under the central government's 'Ude Desh Ka Aam Nagrik' (UDAN) scheme, the aim is to connect small towns and remote areas by air, and aircraft like the SJ-100 are likely to be suitable for this purpose.

Along with aircraft manufacturing, employment is expected to increase in industries related to components, maintenance, and supply chains. India's production capacity, technical skills, and infrastructure in the aviation sector will gain new momentum.

There is a decades-long history of cooperation in the defense sector between India and Russia. This agreement in the civil aviation sector will further strengthen the strategic partnership between the two countries. According to experts, this project will make India's aviation industry more competitive and enhance the country's presence in the global market.
