(Sonam Wangchuk) The famous environmental activist from Ladakh, Sonam Wangchuk, has written a letter from Jodhpur Central Jail. In the letter, he demanded an independent judicial inquiry into the deaths of four people in the violence. He wrote in clear terms, “I will remain in prison until an impartial investigation into these deaths is conducted.” This letter was shared by Advocate Mustafa Haji, the legal advisor of the Leh Apex Body (LAB). Wangchuk expressed condolences to the families of those who died in the violence and prayed for the injured and those arrested. He wrote, “The struggle for peace and justice in Ladakh will continue.”

After the violence in Leh on September 24, Wangchuk was arrested under the National Security Act (NSA) on September 26. He is currently in Jodhpur prison, and a habeas corpus petition for his release will be heard in the Supreme Court on October 6. This hearing will take place before the bench of Justice Arvind Kumar and N.V. Anjaria.

In the letter, Wangchuk expressed full support for the LAB and Kargil Democratic Alliance (KDA). He stated, “The status of a state for Ladakh and inclusion in the Sixth Schedule of the Constitution is our legitimate right,” said Wangchuk.
