The largest shutdown in US history
President of the United States, Donald Trump, signed a funding bill to end the largest government shutdown in American history, which lasted 43 days. This shutdown significantly impacted some service sectors in the United States. Primarily, there were major disruptions in air travel. Additionally, there were delays in food assistance.
On Wednesday, just hours after the Republican-led House of Representatives approved the bill by a vote of 222-209, the President signed the bill. House Democrats are expressing anger at their Senate counterparts for failing to reach an agreement on extending the healthcare subsidy guarantee. However, Trump blamed the Democrats for the long-running shutdown and urged the American people to remember this situation when voting in the 2026 midterm elections. “I want to tell the American people, do not forget this. When we come to the midterms and other things, do not forget what they have done to our country,” he said.
At the beginning of the week, the Senate voted 60-40 to advance the bill following an agreement between moderate Democrats, a group of Republican leaders, and the White House. This funding bill will prevent federal agencies from laying off employees until January 30, 2026, and will also curb Trump's efforts to reduce the number of federal employees. All federal employees, including military personnel, border patrol agents, and air traffic controllers, will also receive reimbursement. Federal employees laid off due to the 43-day shutdown can return to work as early as Thursday. This bill will increase funding until January 30, 2026, which will add approximately $1.8 trillion annually to the federal government's $38 trillion debt.
