Maharashtra Faces Significant Increase in Coronavirus Patients
Even as much of the world has moved past the peak of the COVID-19 pandemic, Maharashtra is witnessing a concerning resurgence in coronavirus cases. Health authorities have reported a notable uptick in infections, signaling the return of the virus—potentially fueled by a new variant. According to the latest data, Maharashtra recorded 45 new COVID-19 cases on May 23, with Mumbai alone accounting for 35 of these. Pune reported 4 new cases, Kolhapur and Raigad registered 2 each, while Thane and Latur reported one case each. With these additions, the total number of active COVID-19 cases in Mumbai has risen to 183 as of May 22.
Since January 2025, the state has conducted 6,819 COVID-19 tests, with 210 positive cases reported statewide. Of these, 183 have been identified in Mumbai, indicating a concentration of infections in the city. Encouragingly, 81 patients have fully recovered so far. The remaining active cases are reported to have mild symptoms and are currently being treated at home under medical supervision.
Health officials are closely monitoring the situation and have urged citizens to remain cautious, especially in urban areas like Mumbai where the spike is most visible. Authorities are also investigating whether the rise in cases is linked to a new strain of the virus.
