In a dramatic late-night rescue operation, the Indian Coast Guard successfully saved 24 crew members from a foreign cargo ship that capsized off the coast of Kerala. The incident occurred in the early hours of May 24, approximately 38 nautical miles southwest of Kochi. According to preliminary reports, the vessel, a 184-meter-long Liberian-flagged container ship named MSC ELSA 3, had arrived in Kochi on May 24 after departing from Wizingam Port on May 23.
At around 1:25 AM on May 24, the ship’s management company, M/s MSC Ship Management, alerted Indian authorities that the vessel had been struck by severe 26-degree waves, leading to the ship capsizing. The crew immediately requested urgent assistance. The Indian Coast Guard responded promptly, launching a search and rescue mission that culminated in the successful evacuation of all 24 people on board. No casualties or serious injuries have been reported.
Further investigation is underway to assess the cause of the capsizing and the condition of the vessel, which remains partially submerged at sea. This swift and effective rescue highlights the preparedness and dedication of India's maritime safety agencies in responding to emergencies on the high seas.
