Indian Railway: Use of AI Technology for Women's Safety at Railway Stations

Facial Recognition System at Railway Stations for Women's Safety

In the backdrop of the continuous rise in crimes against women across the country, the central government has taken a significant step for the safety of female passengers. To provide a safe environment for women at railway stations, a Facial Recognition System based on Artificial Intelligence (AI) technology will soon be implemented at many major railway stations. The central government has directly informed the Supreme Court about this plan.

Through this technology, images obtained from CCTV cameras will be analyzed to identify individuals with a suspicious or criminal background. This facial recognition system will be linked to the police database, enabling the tracking of any suspect and immediate action against them.

These cameras will be installed at busy Indian railway stations. The government believes this technology will be particularly important in reducing the incidence of sexual assaults and other crimes against female passengers.

The efficiency of this system is extremely fast — it can compare millions of faces in a few milliseconds. In Delhi in 2024, with the help of a similar system, many thieves and snatching criminals were identified. The specialty of this technology is that it can accurately identify faces even from low-quality and blurry CCTV footage. This decision will be important from the perspective of women's safety, and the central government is considering implementing this technology in other public places across the country in the future.
