Test Cricket: “Rohit Used to Abuse…” — Shubman Gill’s Shocking Statement on Rohit Sharma and Virat Kohli
As India takes on England in a high-stakes five-match Test series, all eyes are on new Test captain Shubman Gill. Leading the team in a major overseas challenge for the first time, Gill has made headlines not just for his on-field leadership but also for his candid remarks about former Test stalwarts Rohit Sharma and Virat Kohli.
In a recent interview, Shubman Gill opened up about his experience under the leadership of both Rohit and Virat, offering rare insights into their styles and influence on the team. The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) appointed Gill as the Test captain earlier this year, following the retirement of both Rohit Sharma and Virat Kohli from the longest format of the game.
"Rohit Sharma's Strategy Was Unique"
Speaking about Rohit Sharma, Gill revealed, “Rohit Sharma’s strategy in cricket was very unique. He used to talk to players directly and managed the team very efficiently. Even if he abused someone, nobody felt bad. That was just his way — straightforward and honest.”
He added that Rohit's leadership style, though occasionally harsh, was driven by his passion for the game and the team’s success. “Sometimes he could be blunt, but that was necessary for the team’s growth,” Gill said.
“Virat Kohli’s Thinking Left a Mark”
Reflecting on Virat Kohli's influence, Gill said, “Virat's cricketing thoughts really touched my heart. If a strategy failed, he wouldn’t lose patience. Instead, he’d immediately talk to the bowlers about what could be changed. That calm and clarity were inspiring.”
Now that both Rohit and Virat have stepped away from Test cricket, Gill acknowledged the pressure on him to carry the legacy forward. “It’s been 17 years since India won a Test series in England. The last time was in 2007 under Rahul Dravid’s captaincy. This time, we’re determined to change that,” he stated.
With the historic series underway and India seeking redemption after years of near-misses, Gill’s leadership — and his ability to draw from the strengths of past legends — will be crucial in scripting a new chapter in Indian Test cricket.
