IPL 2025: Mumbai Indians Storm into Playoffs with 59-Run Win Over Delhi Capitals
Mumbai Indians sealed a dominant entry into the IPL 2025 playoffs with a resounding 59-run victory over Delhi Capitals at the Wankhede Stadium. With this win, Mumbai solidified their playoff spot, while Delhi's campaign came to an end for the season.
Batting first, Mumbai Indians posted a competitive total of 180/5 in 20 overs, thanks to a late surge led by Suryakumar Yadav, who played a blistering knock. In reply, Delhi Capitals crumbled under pressure, getting bowled out for 121 runs in 18.2 overs.
Suryakumar Yadav Leads the Charge
Suryakumar Yadav was the standout performer for Mumbai, smashing a fiery half-century. The home team hammered 48 runs in the last two overs, with Yadav plundering 21 runs in the final over bowled by Dushmantha Chameera, including two sixes and two boundaries. He received able support from Naman Dhir, who hit two sixes and two fours in the 19th over.
Mumbai had a rocky start after the early dismissal of Rohit Sharma, followed by quick exits of Ryan Rickelton and Will Jacks, leaving the scoreboard at 58/3. A stabilizing 55-run partnership between Suryakumar and Tilak Varma revived the innings, although Tilak and skipper Hardik Pandya fell cheaply soon after.
Mitchell Santner Spins the Web
In the bowling department, Mitchell Santner turned the game decisively in Mumbai’s favor, picking up 3 wickets. His double strike in the 15th over—dismissing Sameer Rizvi and Ashutosh Sharma—triggered a collapse in Delhi’s chase.
Only Sameer Rizvi and Vipraj Nigam offered some resistance with the bat, but the rest of the Delhi line-up faltered. Key batters including Faf du Plessis, Lokesh Rahul, Tristan Stubbs, and Abhishek Porel failed to contribute significantly. From 55/3, Delhi nosedived to 104/7, ending all hopes of a comeback.
Du Plessis Takes Over as Captain
In a surprising move, Faf du Plessis led the Delhi Capitals in place of the unwell Axar Patel. At 40 years and 312 days, du Plessis became the fourth-oldest captain in IPL history, joining the ranks of MS Dhoni, Shane Watson, and Adam Gilchrist.
The decision caught many by surprise when du Plessis walked out for the toss. Speaking later, he confirmed that Axar Patel was unavailable due to illness.
