Bharat Bandh: Call for 'Bharat Bandh' on February 12; Confusion regarding schools, colleges, and government offices
Various labor, bank employee, and farmer organizations in the country have called for a 'Bharat Bandh' on February 12, and it is expected to impact many sectors. This nationwide strike on Thursday involves 10 central trade unions, and it has been called against new labor laws, the India-US trade agreement, changes in MGNREGA, and other policies.
Organizations like INTUC, AITUC, HMS, CITU, AIUTUC, TUCC, SEWA, AICCTU, LPF, and UTUC have come together to take an aggressive stance against the central government's policies. The organizations allege that the new labor codes will infringe on workers' rights, reduce job security, and promote privatization. There is also dissatisfaction expressed regarding minimum wages, social security, and employment guarantee schemes.
The main demands behind this strike are to repeal four new labor laws, withdraw proposed bills, and strengthen MGNREGA. There is also a demand to repeal the 'Developed India-Employment and Livelihood Guarantee Scheme (Rural) Act 2025'.
What will remain closed?
On February 12, the functioning of public sector banks is likely to be affected. Bank employee and officer organizations have announced participation in the strike. However, no official holiday has been declared by the Reserve Bank or the concerned banks. Therefore, bank services may partially continue in some places. This strike may also affect government offices. It is speculated that the functioning may be impacted, especially in states where the organizations have more influence.
Schools and Colleges: Open or Closed?
No official order has been issued to keep schools and colleges closed across the country. However, in states like Kerala, Karnataka, and Odisha, some educational institutions may decide based on local conditions due to the possibility of public transport being disrupted. Overall, the impact of the 'Bharat Bandh' can vary from state to state. Citizens are advised to avoid unnecessary travel and pay attention to local administration's instructions.
