New Toll Policy: Annual Pass for ₹3,000 Proposed for Commuters; FASTag Integration Required
What’s New in the Toll Policy?
The revised policy marks a significant departure from the traditional toll plaza system, introducing a fixed toll charge per kilometre model. Instead of toll booths, vehicles will be charged ₹50 for every 100 kilometres traveled, calculated using digital tracking via FASTag technology.
The ₹3,000 annual pass will allow unlimited travel for personal cars across national and state expressways for a full year. There is no need for a separate physical pass, as the amount will be linked directly to the user’s FASTag account, ensuring seamless toll payment across the country.
“This system aims to simplify toll collection and make highway travel more affordable for the general public,” said a senior official from the Ministry of Road Transport and Highways.
Conditions and Implementation Plan
While the annual pass provides considerable savings, its usage is subject to certain conditions linked to FASTag compliance. Only vehicles with active and valid FASTag accounts will be eligible for the scheme. The system is also designed to eliminate long queues at toll plazas and reduce travel time by eliminating the need for manual collection.
New Infrastructure and Pilot Rollout
The Delhi–Jaipur Expressway is expected to be among the first to implement the new toll system. As part of the rollout:
Highway infrastructure will be upgraded with advanced sensors, cameras, and tracking systems.
The entire national and state highway network has been digitally mapped to support seamless integration.
The government is also exploring the possibility of allowing banks to hold equity stakes in roadside infrastructure projects to boost private investment and development.
Current Toll Pass System vs. New Model
Currently, only monthly passes are available for toll exemptions or discounts, mainly benefiting local residents near toll plazas. The new model, with an annual pass option, extends benefits to a wider group of long-distance and frequent travelers, significantly reducing yearly commuting expenses.
The official notification of the new policy is expected soon, following which detailed guidelines and procedures will be released for the public. The initiative is part of the government’s broader effort to modernize toll collection, enhance transparency, and promote digital-first infrastructure development.
