Prime Minister Modi arrived in Colombo on Friday evening, April 4, where he was given a grand state welcome. He was received at the airport by five key ministers, including Foreign Minister Wijitha Herath, Health Minister Nalinda Jayatissa, and Fisheries Minister Ramalingam Chandrasekhar. The ceremonial welcome continued at Independence Square, where PM Modi was honoured with a guard of honour and a 21-gun salute.

This visit marks Modi’s fourth official trip to Sri Lanka, underscoring the growing strategic and cultural ties between the two neighbouring countries.

While accepting the award, Prime Minister Modi remarked, “This honour belongs to 140 crore Indians. It reflects the deep friendship and shared values between Sri Lanka and India. India is not just a neighbour but a 'true friend'.”

The 'Sri Lanka Mitra Vibhushan' award symbolizes the high regard Sri Lanka holds for Prime Minister Modi’s consistent efforts in strengthening regional cooperation, economic collaboration, and cultural exchange. His leadership has played a pivotal role in initiatives such as infrastructure development, health partnerships, and maritime cooperation in the Indian Ocean region.

This momentous recognition not only celebrates Modi’s individual contributions but also reinforces the enduring people-to-people connection between India and Sri Lanka.
