MR Srinivasan: Nuclear scientist M. R Srinivasan passes away
Dr. M. R. Srinivasan, a senior and renowned scientist in the field of nuclear energy in India and former Chairman of the Atomic Energy Commission, passed away today on Tuesday. He was 95 years old. He is survived by his wife and a daughter. Dr. Srinivasan has made valuable contributions to the development of nuclear energy in India and had also worked with the great scientist Dr. Homi Bhabha. His work gave a strong foundation to the country's nuclear energy program. His last rites were performed in Chennai. On this occasion, District Collector Lakshmi Bhavya Tanniru paid tribute by offering floral tributes to his body. His departure has created a huge void in the Indian scientific field.
Dr. Mylapore Ramaswamy Srinivasan was a renowned nuclear scientist of India. He was born on 5 January 1930. He studied engineering from Banaras Hindu University. Later, he did his higher studies in nuclear energy engineering from the University of Illinois in the United States. He played an important role in India's nuclear energy program. He worked with Dr. Homi Bhabha. He was the Chairman of the Atomic Energy Commission from 1987 to 1990.
He was instrumental in the development of India's first PHWR reactor. He has been awarded the Padma Shri (1984) and Padma Bhushan (1990) for his work. Dr. Srinivasan played a key role in the establishment of the Nuclear Power Corporation of India Limited (NPCIL). He was actively involved in policy formulation in the nuclear energy sector. He took concrete steps towards India's nuclear self-reliance. His contribution is still considered a role model in the scientific and academic fields. With his demise, the Indian nuclear energy sector has lost a visionary leader.
