UIDAI’s New Announcement: Major Rule Change for Aadhaar Card Updates from 2025

The Unique Identification Authority of India (UIDAI) has issued a fresh directive regarding the Aadhaar card, an essential identity document for Indian citizens. From the financial year 2025-26, stricter rules will come into effect for both new Aadhaar enrolments and updating existing Aadhaar cards.

Aadhaar is widely used for accessing various government schemes, subsidies, and services. Recognizing its importance, UIDAI has now made it mandatory to submit specific supporting documents for updates or new applications.

New Document Requirements

To apply for a new Aadhaar card or to update an existing one, individuals must now present valid proof of identity and address. The following documents have been declared mandatory (any one or more, as applicable):

• Indian Passport (accepted for identity, address, relationship, and date of birth)

• PAN Card

• Voter ID Card

• Ration Card

• Driving License

• Pension Card

• Government-issued certificates (as proof of age or address)

Additionally, a "One Aadhaar per individual" policy will be enforced to ensure no citizen holds multiple Aadhaar numbers.

Biometric Changes Require Physical Visit

For biometric updates (such as fingerprints, iris scan, or photograph), individuals must visit their nearest Aadhaar Enrolment Centre. These updates cannot be done online.

What You Can Still Do Online

UIDAI has clarified that updates related to the following fields can be done through its official website:

• Name

• Address

• Date of Birth

• Gender

• Mobile Number

• Email ID

Citizens are encouraged to ensure all Aadhaar details are up to date to avoid disruptions in government services and identification verification.
