Government Decision : 10-Minute Delivery Stopped! Central Government's Ban on Fast Delivery for Gig Workers' Safety
The central government has made an important and far-reaching decision on the issue of delivery workers' safety. The Ministry of Labor has banned the 10-minute delivery services offered on online platforms, making the concept of quick delivery by companies like Swiggy, Zomato, Blinkit, and Zepto a thing of the past. This decision prioritizes the safety of millions of gig workers. Recently, Union Labor Minister Mansukh Mandaviya held a meeting with senior officials of major online delivery companies. In this meeting, there was a serious discussion about the stress on delivery partners due to the 10-minute delivery deadline. Due to the time constraints, many delivery workers are forced to drive fast, leading to frequent complaints about increased accidents.
Particularly after the strikes by gig workers across the country on December 25 and 31, this issue came to the forefront. Workers raised their voices about accidents, inadequate insurance facilities, and unsafe working conditions. Subsequently, the government intervened directly to resolve this issue. Following the government's suggestion, companies have agreed to remove the mandatory 10-minute delivery time. Blinkit was the first to implement this decision by removing the '10-minute delivery' claim from its branding. The company's tagline has also been changed to mention 'Over 30,000 products delivered to your doorstep.'
In the coming days, similar changes are likely to occur from Zepto, Swiggy, and Zomato. The government has clarified that the purpose of this decision is not to shut down services, but to create a safe, stable, and humane working environment for gig workers. This decision may require customers to wait a little, but prioritizing the safety of delivery partners is considered a positive and necessary step.
What is the decision for the safety of gig workers?
After repeated interventions, Union Labor Minister Mansukh Mandaviya has convinced major delivery aggregators to remove the mandatory 10-minute delivery deadline. A meeting was organized to address concerns about delivery timelines with major platforms like Blinkit, Zepto, Zomato, and Swiggy. Blinkit has already implemented these directives and removed the promise of 10-minute delivery from their branding.
It is expected that other aggregators will follow suit in the coming days.
The aim of this move is to ensure more safety, security, and better working conditions for gig workers.
As part of this change, Blinkit has updated their brand messaging.
The company's main tagline has been changed from “Delivering over 10,000 products in 10 minutes” to “Delivering over 30,000 products to your doorstep.”
