Mumbai Metro : 2026 is the year of Mumbai Metro! Three new 22 km lines to start soon
Soon, Mumbaikars will have a major relief from the massive crowd in local trains. This is because a significant expansion of the metro service, which will serve as an effective alternative to locals, is set to happen in 2026, with three new metro lines being introduced for passengers in Mumbai. It is expected that daily commuting will become more convenient, faster, and safer.
A total of 350 kilometers of 17 metro lines are planned in Mumbai. Of these, currently, four lines covering approximately 70 kilometers are operational, and in the first phase of the new year, three new lines covering a total of 22 kilometers will be launched. This will provide significant relief to passengers in the western, central, and eastern suburbs.
Metro 4A, which is the Gaimukh–Kasara Vadavali–Ghatkopar–Wadala line, is an important line connecting Thane and Mumbai. This line was expected to start in December, but currently, the tests have been completed. In the first phase, there are indications that the metro will start at ten stations between Gaimukh and Cadbury Junction, and it is likely to be fully operational by mid-2026.
Metro 9, an elevated line, will run from Dahisar East to Netaji Subhash Chandra Bose Ground in Bhayandar. In the first phase of this line, four stations have been prepared: Dahisar East, Pandurangwadi, Miragaon, and Kashigaon, and it is likely that the line will be inaugurated by the Prime Minister at the beginning of 2026 after the model code of conduct ends.
So, Metro 2B is an important corridor connecting West Mumbai to the eastern coast, running from ESIC Nagar to Mandala. The first phase between Mandala and Chembur has been completed, and this corridor is expected to open for passengers in early 2026. It is anticipated that these three metro corridors will make commuting easier for Mumbaikars and significantly reduce the strain on local trains.
