Aditya Thackeray Slams Government Over Water Tanker Strike in Mumbai, Urges BMC to Provide Clarity

A strike has been called by the Tanker Association in Mumbai from today.

As Mumbai grapples with an emerging water crisis, the Mumbai Water Tanker Association has called for an indefinite strike starting today, prompting concern across the city. The protest is in response to the new guidelines issued by the Central Ground Water Authority (CGWA), which the association deems impractical for bulk water suppliers.

With only 33% water stock remaining in the seven lakes that supply Mumbai, the timing of the strike has heightened anxieties. The halt in tanker services is likely to impact housing societies, high-rise buildings, chawls, commercial establishments, hospitals, and infrastructure projects, many of which rely heavily on tanker water due to inadequate municipal supply.

Against this backdrop, Aditya Thackeray has now reacted by tweeting. Aditya Thackeray said that the Mumbai Tanker Association has called for a strike today, and considering the increasing demand for water, many housing societies, high-rise buildings, chawls, commercial offices and industries will be affected in these days.

Criticism of Policy and Call for Action

Thackeray did not hold back in his criticism of the Central Government, saying:

“Mumbaikars are now being made to pay the price for some impractical guidelines drafted in air-conditioned government offices in Delhi.”

He urged the BMC Commissioner to address the public through a press conference and clearly outline the solutions being planned to mitigate the water shortage.

Desalination Plant Mentioned

In a pointed remark, Thackeray also criticized the Assam government’s decision to cancel the desalination plant project that was proposed during his tenure.

“Had the desalination project not been scrapped, Mumbai’s water crisis could have been resolved by 2026,” he claimed.

As the city braces for the impact of the strike, public concern continues to rise. Citizens are awaiting clear communication from the authorities on how the situation will be managed in the coming days.
