An auto driver in Mumbai earns more than 5 lakhs per month, find out how
A surprising incident has come to light in Mumbai where an auto-rickshaw driver was found to be earning more than ₹5 lakh per month — not by driving his rickshaw, but by running an illegal bag-keeping service near the US Embassy. The incident came to light after a person shared his experience on LinkedIn, which soon went viral and prompted police action.
LinkedIn Post Exposes Unusual Business
Rahul Rupani, a city resident, had gone to the US Embassy in Mumbai for visa-related work. In his viral LinkedIn post, he described how security guards at the embassy denied him entry with his bag, which left him in a dilemma. At that moment, an auto-rickshaw driver approached him and offered to safely keep the bag — for a charge of ₹1,000. Initially hesitant, Rupani eventually handed over his bag due to lack of options. Later, the driver revealed that he stores the bags of 20 to 30 people each day, making between ₹5 to ₹8 lakh every month — all without ever turning on his rickshaw meter.
Mumbai Police Spring into Action
The viral post quickly caught the attention of Mumbai Police, who launched an investigation. As a result, authorities arrested 12 individuals, including the rickshaw driver involved. The police stated that this kind of service is illegal and poses a serious threat to public safety, especially in sensitive areas like embassies.
Security Risks and Public Safety
Officials emphasized that allowing unknown individuals to store personal belongings outside secure zones poses major risks. "Rickshaw drivers are not permitted to operate such services. It is a clear violation of safety protocols," a police spokesperson said.
Public Reaction
The incident has triggered a mix of shock and concern across social media. While some users expressed amazement at the driver's earnings, others raised alarm over the lack of security checks and potential misuse. Mumbai Police have now stepped up monitoring near consulates and are urging the public to avoid handing over personal belongings to unauthorized individuals.
