Budget 2026-27 : Announcement of Budget Session by Central Government
The central government has officially announced the upcoming budget session of the Parliament. The dates for the session were approved in the Cabinet Committee on Parliamentary Affairs (CCPA) meeting chaired by Union Defense Minister Rajnath Singh. According to the parliamentary calendar, Union Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman will present the Union Budget for the financial year 2026-27 on Sunday, February 1, 2026. This will be the first time in recent history that the budget is presented on a Sunday.
According to reliable sources, the budget session is set to begin on January 28, 2026, with President Droupadi Murmu's address marking its commencement. The Economic Survey will be presented in Parliament on January 29. This report will provide a detailed review of the country's economic condition, growth rate, revenue, investment, and performance in key sectors before the budget.
This year's session will be conducted in two phases. The first phase will take place from January 28 to February 13. The second phase of the session will start on March 9 and continue until April 2, 2026. During this period, detailed discussions on the budget, discussions on grant demands, and consideration of various important bills are expected.
The budget to be presented on February 1, 2026, will be the country's 88th Union Budget. The tradition of presenting the budget at 11 AM on February 1 started in 2017. Previously, the budget was presented on February 28. This date was changed during the tenure of former Finance Minister Arun Jaitley.
With this budget, Nirmala Sitharaman will become the Finance Minister to present the Union Budget nine consecutive times. Previously, former Prime Minister Morarji Desai presented the budget a total of ten times over two terms. P. Chidambaram presented it nine times, while Pranab Mukherjee presented the Union Budget eight times.
In Prime Minister Narendra Modi's second term, the responsibility of the Finance Ministry was entrusted to Nirmala Sitharaman. She continues to serve as the country's Finance Minister in Modi government's third term as well. Therefore, the entire nation is focused on whether this year's budget will bring economic reforms, growth, employment, and relief to the middle class.
