The Chief Justice of the country's Supreme Court, Bhushan Gavai, has written a letter to the Ministry of Law and Justice. In which he has recommended his successor. Justice Suryakant has been recommended by him. This is because Chief Justice Bhushan Gavai is soon to retire. Before this, he has announced his successor. On November 23, Gavai's term as Chief Justice will end. Therefore, it is likely that Justice Suryakant will take over as Chief Justice after him.

There is a tradition regarding the position of Chief Justice that the current Chief Justice must recommend the name of their successor to the Ministry of Law one month before their retirement. This clarifies who will be the next Chief Justice of the country. Meanwhile, according to the rules of seniority currently in service in the Supreme Court, Justice Suryakant is there. He will be the 53rd Chief Justice of the country. He will take charge as the Chief Justice of the country on November 24 and will retire on February 9, 2027.

Who is Justice Suryakant?

Justice Suryakant was born on February 10, 1962, in Hisar, Haryana. He is currently the senior-most judge in the Supreme Court after Chief Justice Bhushan Gavai. He graduated from Government Post Graduate College, Hisar in 1981 and completed his law education from Maharshi Dayanand University, Rohtak in 1984. In the same year, he started practicing at the Hisar District Court. A year later, he went to practice in Punjab and Haryana. In 2004, he was appointed as a permanent judge of the Punjab and Haryana High Court. Subsequently, he was appointed as the Chief Justice of the Himachal Pradesh High Court on October 5, 2018. A year later, he was appointed as a judge of the Supreme Court on May 24, 2019.
