Coimbatore School Principal Suspended After Girl Forced to Take Exam on Staircase During Menstruation
Incident Sparks Outrage After Video Goes Viral
The incident drew widespread attention after a video recorded by the girl’s mother was shared on social media on Wednesday. The footage shows the girl sitting on the stairs and writing her exam papers. According to the girl, a teacher informed the principal about her having reached puberty, after which she was barred from entering the classroom.
The child, a Class 8 student, was reportedly asked to take her science exam on April 7 and social studies paper on April 9 while seated outside.
Preliminary Findings and Parental Involvement
A preliminary inquiry by the School Education Department and local police revealed that the girl had begun menstruating on April 5, and her mother had allegedly requested separate arrangements for her daughter’s exams.
“Initial investigation suggests that the mother was aware of the arrangement. However, she was later upset to see her daughter sitting for the exam without a desk, in an uncomfortable and humiliating setting,” a senior police official stated.
Principal Suspended; Show Cause Notice Issued
While the school management claimed that the decision was made based on the mother’s request, officials noted that the execution of the arrangement was insensitive and lacked basic dignity. The principal has been suspended until the inquiry is completed.
“We have issued a show cause notice and initiated a formal inquiry through the School Education Department. Appropriate action will be taken based on the findings,” the official added.
Public and Official Response
The incident has sparked outrage among parents, activists, and educationists, who criticized the school for failing to provide a safe and respectful environment for a menstruating student. Many have called for stronger guidelines and awareness programs to prevent discrimination and stigma around menstruation in schools.
This case highlights the urgent need for gender sensitivity and menstrual health education in educational institutions to ensure that no student is subjected to such treatment again.
