Follow the laws, or leave India!” Supreme Court's direct warning to WhatsApp-Meta
High Court Angry On Whatsapp New Features : The Supreme Court strongly reprimanded WhatsApp and its parent company Meta on Tuesday. The court clearly warned that there will be no compromise on the personal data and privacy of Indian citizens. If the laws cannot be followed, then there is no right to do business in India, the court firmly stated.
This dispute has arisen due to WhatsApp's 2021 privacy rules. According to those rules, it was made mandatory to share user information with Meta. Users were not given the option to refuse this. In this case, the Competition Commission imposed a large financial penalty on WhatsApp. Meta has approached the Supreme Court against this.
During the hearing, the court expressed dissatisfaction with the use of data. The judges noted that seeing advertisements immediately after private conversations is serious. The court also clarified that companies cannot shirk responsibility by creating policies that ordinary citizens do not understand. Now, Meta will have to provide a written assurance in court that users' data will not be misused. Until then, the next hearing of this case will not take place.
