Mumbai Police : Illegal Gutkha Worth 2 Crores Coming to Mumbai from Gujarat Seized; Swift Action by Samtanagar Police
The campaign against gutkha in the state, including Mumbai, has achieved great success as the Samtanagar police have seized illegal gutkha worth two crore rupees coming from Gujarat to Mumbai. This operation was carried out near Thane in the early hours, and it is speculated that this incident may expose a large network of gutkha smuggling.
According to police sources, Samtanagar police received a tip-off in the morning that a truck carrying a large quantity of prohibited gutkha was coming from Gujarat to Mumbai. Based on this information, the police immediately set up a trap and stopped the truck in the Thane area. Upon searching the truck, it was found that a large quantity of prohibited gutkha from various companies was hidden inside.
Preliminary investigation has revealed that the market value of the seized gutkha is approximately two crore rupees. The gutkha was being transported hidden in plastic bags and sacks. Notably, the documents outside the truck showed records of other goods, but in reality, illegal gutkha was being transported inside.
In this case, the police have taken the truck driver into custody and are conducting a thorough investigation. The police are trying to gather information about on whose instructions the gutkha was being brought, where it was to be delivered, and which main gutkha mafia are operating behind this. The police have expressed the possibility of a large racket being exposed through this investigation.
Even though there is a ban on gutkha, pan masala, and flavored tobacco in the state, the fact that such smuggling is happening openly is considered serious from a health perspective. Considering the deadly diseases like cancer caused by gutkha, the government has imposed strict restrictions on it. However, it has come to light from this operation that smugglers are bringing gutkha into Maharashtra using different methods.
The Samanagar police have stated that this operation has caused a stir among smugglers and such operations will be intensified in the future. The Food and Drug Administration has also been informed about this case and further legal action is underway. This operation has dealt a major financial blow to the gangs supplying gutkha in Mumbai, and the police investigation is rapidly progressing to reach the main masterminds.
