(India) Pakistan has become uneasy due to India's strict stance on the Indus Water Treaty. Against this backdrop, Pakistan has approached the United Nations Security Council, requesting India to resume the treaty. Pakistan's permanent representative to the United Nations, Aseem Iftikhar Ahmed, made several allegations against India, stating that India has unilaterally suspended the treaty and is using water as a weapon. He claimed that this decision has endangered the lives of millions of Pakistani citizens who depend on this water for food and energy security.
Iftikhar Ahmed stated that the Indus Water Treaty, mediated by the World Bank in 1960, has been regulating the water distribution between the two countries for six decades. According to this treaty, the western rivers in the Indus river basin are allocated to Pakistan, while the eastern rivers are allocated to India. After the Pahalgam terrorist attack, India took a tough stance against Pakistan and decided to suspend the Indus Water Treaty. Pakistan now feels the loss due to this decision and is demanding the resumption of the treaty on international platforms.
According to Pakistan's claim, no provision in the treaty allows for unilateral suspension. Therefore, Pakistan has demanded at the United Nations that India withdraw this decision.
