Most Powerful Nation’s: India’s Big Leap! Top-3 Position in the List of the World's Most Powerful Countries
The Asia Power Index 2025 report released by the Lowy Institute highlights India's growing global influence. The report evaluates 27 Asian countries based on eight key criteria: military capability, economic strength, defence networks, diplomatic influence, cultural reach, future potential, resilience, and global connectivity. In all these indicators, India has performed impressively, strengthening its position as the world's third most powerful nation.
According to the report, India's score of 40.0 points is a testament to its overall strength. Over the past decade, India has established itself as a ‘Major Power’ due to strong economic growth, modernization in the defense sector, global diplomatic engagement, and advancements in the technology sector. India's voice on the international stage has become more assertive, and it has achieved significant growth in strategic partnerships as well.
On the other hand, the United States ranks first with 80.5 points and remains the leading superpower. However, the report notes that its influence has declined this year. China, with a score of 73.7, is in second place and appears to be consistently striving to catch up with the United States. China's growing military and economic presence in Asia and the Indo-Pacific is a major reason for this outcome.
Alongside India's growth, Pakistan's position on the global stage appears to have weakened further. In 2024, Pakistan, which was in the top 15, has fallen to the 16th position this year. Due to economic instability, internal political unrest, and limited diplomatic influence, Pakistan's recognition as a 'regional power' is steadily diminishing. The contrast between India's continuously growing capability and Pakistan's decline reveals significant changes in the strategic equation of South Asia.
In the latest report of the Asia Power Index, countries like Japan, South Korea, Australia, Singapore, and Indonesia have also maintained an influential position. Japan, with a score of 38.8, is in fourth place, and its technical leadership and diplomatic influence appear to be increasing. Russia, with 32.1 points, has secured fifth place, showing improvement for the first time since 2019, which is attributed to its growing strategic partnership with China and North Korea.
India's progress is not merely a matter of numbers but a part of the transformation taking place on a rapidly changing global stage. Along with the country's growing economic capacity, investments in the defense sector, initiatives to enhance ‘soft power’, and active participation in international organizations are consistently noted in global reports. The report expresses confidence that India, a rapidly rising nation, will become a stronger and more decisive global power in the coming decade. All these developments make it clear that India is now emerging steadily not just as a regional but as a global power. India's role will be decisive in the changing strategic equations in Asia as well as across the world.
