After Bhushan Gavai retired, Justice Suryakant became the new Chief Justice of India. President Draupadi Murmu administered the oath to Justice Suryakant. The oath ceremony took place in the presence of the Chief Justices of seven countries.

Justice Suryakant has taken oath as the 53rd Chief Justice of the country. This oath-taking ceremony took place at the Rashtrapati Bhavan. Suryakant has been appointed as the Chief Justice. As a judge of the Supreme Court, he was involved in hearings on the abrogation of Article 370, freedom of expression, and citizenship rights cases.
