LPG Price Hike: After Petrol and Diesel, Gas Cylinders Become Costlier
At a time when inflation is already putting pressure on household budgets, the price of LPG gas cylinders has now been hiked by ₹50, adding to the woes of the common man. This development comes close on the heels of the recent excise duty hike on petrol and diesel, though the government has clarified that fuel prices will remain unchanged for now.
Gas Cylinder Prices Increased by ₹50
The revised prices will be applicable to both Pradhan Mantri Ujjwala Yojana (PMUY) beneficiaries and non-Ujjwala customers, effective from 12 midnight on April 8, 2025.
According to Union Petroleum and Natural Gas Minister Hardeep Singh Puri, the new rates are as follows:
Ujjwala scheme beneficiaries will now have to pay ₹550 per cylinder (previously ₹500).
Non-Ujjwala consumers will see prices rise from ₹803 to ₹853 per cylinder.
The price hike has been introduced to help compensate for the ₹43,000 crore loss incurred by oil companies in gas sales over recent months.
No Immediate Impact on Petrol and Diesel Prices
Despite the recent increase in excise duty on petrol and diesel, the Ministry of Petroleum and Natural Gas has assured the public that oil marketing companies will not pass this burden on to consumers—at least for now. The government emphasized that there will be no change in retail prices of petrol and diesel, providing some temporary relief amidst widespread concern.
Rising Costs Add to Household Burden
The simultaneous increase in the cost of fuel and cooking gas is expected to significantly impact household budgets. With the Sensex witnessing a dip, followed by rising prices of essential commodities, consumers are expressing deep concern over the growing cost of living.
About the Ujjwala Yojana
The Pradhan Mantri Ujjwala Yojana aims to provide free LPG connections to poor women in rural areas to promote the use of clean cooking fuel. However, the rising refill costs under this scheme may challenge its affordability for low-income families despite the initial subsidy.
