Maharashtra School Holiday List 2025-26: 129 Holidays, 236 Teaching Days Announced for the New Academic Year
The Maharashtra School Education Department has officially released the academic calendar for government schools for the year 2025–26, announcing a total of 129 holidays and 236 teaching days. The decision comes after extensive consultations with teachers' unions and has been finalized with all-party consensus.
According to the new schedule, most schools across Maharashtra will reopen on June 16, while schools in Vidarbha will resume from June 23 due to regional considerations.
Why the Rise in Holidays?
One of the major reasons for the increased number of holidays this year is that 2025 includes 53 Sundays, all of which are non-working days. In addition to regular weekends, the calendar incorporates all public holidays and scheduled rest days, bringing the total to 129 non-working days.
There was earlier discussion about aligning the school calendar with the CBSE’s April–March format, as proposed under the State School Education Framework (SCF-SE). However, Education Commissioner Sachindra Pratap Singh had clarified in February that the academic year would begin as usual in June, dismissing any changes to the current structure.
Teachers Opposed April Start
Education Minister Pankaj Bhoir had hinted that an April start was under consideration to align with national frameworks, but strong opposition from teachers' unions led to the decision to retain the traditional June start.
The finalized calendar reflects a balance between academic goals and teacher-student welfare, reinforcing the importance of collaborative decision-making in education policy.
