Fishing Ban from June 1: Maharashtra Government Issues Order Amid Early Monsoon — Will Fish Prices Rise?
With the monsoon arriving 12 days early in Maharashtra this year, the state government has announced a ban on deep sea fishing from June 1 to July 31, 2025. The decision follows warnings by the Indian Meteorological Department about potential stormy winds and heavy rainfall in the coastal regions.
The Fisheries Department has stated that any violations of the ban will lead to strict legal action, as the measure has been imposed under the Maharashtra Marine Fisheries Regulation Act, 1981, and its subsequent amendment.
Fishing Ban Details
Fishing is a primary livelihood for communities along the Konkan coast, which has a vast and rich maritime stretch. However, in compliance with the official notification, all forms of mechanized and automatic deep sea fishing are prohibited from June 1 to July 31 — a total of 61 days.
During this period:
Mechanized boats and automatic fishing vessels are not allowed in the deep sea.
Traditional coastal fishing using non-mechanized boats is permitted with caution.
Fishermen have been directed to bring their boats ashore and avoid venturing into deep waters.
Purpose Behind the Ban
The months of June and July mark the breeding season for many fish species. The temporary halt on fishing is intended to support marine biodiversity conservation and ensure sustainable fish production. Authorities also stress that the restriction protects fishermen from dangerous monsoon conditions, including high tides and storm surges.
“The breeding period is crucial to maintaining fish populations,” said a Fisheries Department official. “The ban ensures both ecological balance and long-term livelihood sustainability for the fishing community.”
Impact on Fish Prices
With the suspension of fishing activities, a decline in fish supply is expected in local markets. As a result, there is a strong possibility that fish prices will rise in the coming weeks. This seasonal scarcity may hit the pockets of fish consumers, particularly in urban and coastal areas where seafood is a staple.
In response, the demand for freshwater fish from rivers and inland sources is expected to increase significantly during this two-month period.
Consumers are advised to anticipate fluctuations in seafood availability and pricing, while fishermen are urged to adhere strictly to the guidelines to avoid penalties.
