The decision to shut down all e-rickshaw services in Matheran from February 10 has been taken by the labor rickshaw union. Despite the Supreme Court's clear orders for the permanent liberation of workers from the inhumane practice of hand-pulled rickshaws, the union has accused the state government of not implementing concrete measures. Against this backdrop, the union has clarified that this strict decision has been taken to draw the government's attention and to get their demands accepted. The Supreme Court had clearly directed that hand-pulled rickshaws in Matheran should be completely stopped and the number of e-rickshaws should be increased. However, even after the court's orders, the government neither increased the number of e-rickshaws nor implemented any concrete plan for the rehabilitation of workers. As a result, there is intense dissatisfaction among the labor rickshaw drivers.
Complete shutdown from February 10
According to the decision of the Labor Rickshaw Union, all types of rickshaw services in Matheran will be shut down from February 10. During this protest, rickshaw services will only be available for school students and patients. Apart from this, no rickshaw services will be available for tourists or other citizens, as clarified by the union.
Memorandum to the Administration
In this regard, the office bearers of the organization have submitted a memorandum to the Matheran Municipality, District Collector's Office, Transport Department, and the concerned government officials. The memorandum demands the immediate implementation of the Supreme Court's orders, an increase in the number of e-rickshaws, and the announcement of a clear policy for the livelihood of rickshaw drivers.
Ignoring Court Orders?
The organization alleges that despite the Supreme Court's clear orders to stop hand rickshaws, the state government is ignoring them. As a result, there is a possibility of injustice being done to the workers again. The organization has also emphasized that it is the government's responsibility to provide alternative employment and secure livelihoods after the hand rickshaw practice is stopped.

Matheran is an important tourist destination in Maharashtra. If e-rickshaws are stopped, it is likely to have a significant impact on tourist travel and the tourism business. Especially during holidays, a large number of tourists visit Matheran. In such a situation, if the rickshaw service remains closed, tourists may face major difficulties.
Warning to Intensify the Movement
If the government does not make a concrete decision soon, the Labor Rickshaw Union has warned of intensifying the movement. It has also been stated on behalf of the organization that this fight will continue for the rights and justice of the workers.
